As expected, they have met their 500,000 goal. Additional funds use is up for discussion with Replay Games.
We cant wait to play Leisure Suit Larry 1 in October and hope to see more games remade by Al Lowe. Leisure Suit Larry on a smartphone? Hell yeah!
Update 1:
In just the few days that I posted this roughly $40,000 more has been collected and we are now within $20,000 of the requested goal. With 7 days to do this project could be just days from being green lighted! One thing that seems to have given it a little help is people deciding to donate a little bit more. Chris Jordan in the comments section came up with the idea to have people change their donations to something with a 69 in it. If you are a Larry fan you can picture Al Lowe writing that gag. There are pages and page of people who upped their donations by 69 cents or 69 dollars. Someone else suggested a plaque in the game somewhere honoring the 0.69 Cent club which is also pretty funny.
I will go out on a limb and make two predictions:
1: The goal is met on or by Wednesday April 24th.
2: The 69 cent club gets their plaque.
Stay tuned.
The original story:
Al Lowe has returned. Maybe. They are using Kickstarter to try and fund the remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry. If you had a computer back in the floppy days then you played Leisure Suit Larry, Kings Quest III, Police Quest I or one of many games that Al Lowe was involved with. Leisure Suit Larry was such a great game and to have a remake done would be amazing. I could go on and on but it is easier for me to repeat what I posted to Al on Reddit where I first heard about it:
Lot of comments Al, I hope you read this one. This may seem silly but I credit Leisure Suit Larry for my computer career. Seriously. I used to play the game when I was a truck driver until my boss would kick me out. I had no idea what computers were expect that people worked with them.
Since my boss now was tossing me out I asked my then girlfriend (now wife of 17 years) to let me put a fancy 386 SX\33 on her credit card at Silo. She did and I finished Leisure Suit Larry and became fascinated with games, then taking the computer apart, then HTML and eventually created a popular gaming website which we sold like everyone else during the dot com crash. Bummer, but we have since started another software download site that has been in business for over 12 years now. I wont post the website here because it would seem like advertising and cheapen this post.
I know it seems silly to some but had I not seen this silly Larry character I dont know where I would be today. The company I worked for way back when sold and everyone except for a few people lost their jobs. I wouldnt have wanted to be 40+ with a damaged back looking for work.
I wish you luck and will make a donation to your efforts as it finally gives me a chance to say thank you beyond mere words. I do hope my words reach you and you realize how powerful a silly game can be in someones life. Thanks Al and Larry.
If you were an old school geek and remember Leisure Suit Larry consider making a donation to the game development. Actually, its not just a donation because every donation level, even 5 bucks, gets you something. Higher level donations could get your likeness and name in the game itself! They have almost reached their goal and they have until only May 2nd.
Rarely would you see me asking for donations but if this happens I will be a very happy geek so I cant resist coming to the fans of Majorgeeks to tell them about it and ask for donations to this cause that could possibly bring world peace, polyester and disco!
